Gaudí Day

On Tuesday, I woke up early to get a head start on standing in line for La Sagrada Familia, which is probably Gaudi's most famous architectural wonder and Barcelona's most visited tourist site.  Some may look at the heavily-laden towers and spires and think it's a bit "gaudy"...  :-)   However, I look at it and marvel at the exquisite detail.  Gaudi was quite religious and this church was one of his most cherished projects. He started working on La Sagrada Familia in 1883 and spent his last years working on it, until his death in 1926.  Only a quarter of the church was complete at that time.  The Spanish Civil War in the mid-late 30's halted any construction and it wasn't until the 1950's that any more work was done on the church.  Today, the construction is still ongoing and isn't scheduled to be completed until 2026...100 years after Gaudi's death.

After La Sagrada Familia, I visited Casa Battlo, which was a home that Gaudi refurbished for the wealthy Battlo family right on Passeig de Gracia, the wealthiest street in Barcelona.  He worked on this home between 1904 and 1907.  Again, I was fascinated by his architectural brilliance and was amazed at the little details he incorporated into the home.  I hope you enjoy the photos!
